第一卷 隐公元年春
第一章 《春秋》第一义
公元前722年，即东周时代之鲁隐公元年，是《春秋》二百四十二年记事之首年：
元年春王正月。
三月，公及邾仪父盟于蔑。
夏五月，郑伯克段于鄢。
秋七月，天王使宰咺来归惠公、仲子之赗。
九月，及宋人盟于宿。
冬十有二月，祭伯来。公子益师卒。
以上是《春秋》对鲁隐公元年整整一年中的全部记事，一共六十二字，平均每月五字。即便考虑到当时竹简书写远非便捷，但如果当时职业史官的主要工作就是这些的话，显然可以称得上轻闲。☾1☽
大约古远的年代里记事不易，故而能短则短——《竹书纪年》也是这种体例，只是时间上更加粗疏一些，大多只精确到年；1975年出土的睡虎地秦简有《编年记》，李学勤认为应该就是《史记·秦始皇本纪》李斯奏疏中“臣请史官非《秦记》皆烧之”一语中所谓的《秦记》一类的书，☾2☽从内容到形式都和《竹书纪年》很像，简略到人类理解力所能达到的极限；至于他山之石，汪荣祖曾举西方上古编年史为例，巴比伦人的历史记录竟然和《春秋》如出一辙：
十年八月，拿布破沙尔集阿卡之兵，进军幼发拉底河（In the tent wyear，Nabopolaasar，in th wmonth of Iyyar，mustered the army of Akkad，and reached up the Euphrates）。
苏胡与辛达奴人未御之，献礼以谢（The men o wSuhu and Hindanu did not fight against him；their tribute they laid before him）。
十一月，闻阿沙锐亚之军据瓜城，拿布破沙尔率师击之（In the mont wof Ab，they reported that the army of Assyria was i wthe city of Qablinu，Nabopolaasar went up against them）。
十一月又十二日，击阿沙锐亚军，大败之（In the mont wof Ab，the 12th day，h wdid the battle against the army of Assyria and the army of Assyria was route wbefore him，and great havoc was made of Assyria）；俘虏众多……遂克瓜城（Prisoners i wgreat number they look...On that day the city of Quablinu was captured）。☾3☽
